About David Yates

David Yates was born and raised in the South end of Louisville, off Dixie Hwy. He is the older of two children, raised in a family that believes in the power of public service to improve people’s lives. His grandfather, James B. Yates Sr. served 22 years in the Kentucky General Assembly. David often accompanied him as he met with constituents, traveled to Frankfort and facilitated community events. At an early age David learned how a dedicated public servant can positively impact the people in our community.
David is a graduate of Holy Cross High School where he was active in service and a stand out athlete. David received a medal for his heroic behavior in saving the life of a young girl during a freak accident during his senior year. Such action was indicative of the dedication to his fellow man that he has continually shown throughout his entire life.
With the aid of student loans and academic scholarships, David attended University of Louisville where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He then went on to earn his Juris Doctorate degree from Northern Kentucky University.
While at U of L David served as President of the College Democrats and interned with the Legislative Research Commission. David studied public policy and worked closely with members of the General Assembly and State Senate.
In law school, David was clerk to United States District Court Judge, William Bertelsman and then went to work for the Commonwealths Attorney’s Office. David worked closely with the President of the Commonwealths Attorney Association, Linda Tally-Smith, to advocate laws and policies that better protect our citizen from violent offenders.
David was married to his high school sweetheart, Jill (Raley) Yates, in 2004. They welcomed their first child, Ava, into the world in July of 2006.
Soon thereafter, David was sworn in as an Assistant Attorney General. As an Assistant Attorney General David represented the Commonwealth of Kentucky before the Kentucky Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, he researched current and proposed legislation, and assisted and gave expert advice to Commonwealth and County Attorney’s throughout the state. Additionally, David was appointed to Megan’s Law Team, a special taskforce designed to better protect the public from sexual predators through legislation and prosecution.
David was later retained by the United Auto Workers Union Legal Plan where he practiced primarily in consumer protection litigation. David has been a champion for families; taking on fraudulent corporations, irresponsible behavior, and predatory lenders. David recently opened his firm where he focuses his practice on general litigation services.
David works part-time as an Adjunct Professor at Jefferson Community College Southwest Campus. He has been teaching a Criminal Procedure class at night for the past two years, and enjoys helping those students realize their strengths many of which are pursuing careers in law enforcement.
David is an active member of St. Lawrence Parish and teaches vacation bible school at St. Paul. He is a volunteer coordinator of Financial Peace and serves as a youth mentor for the National Guard's Kentucky Bluegrass Challenge Academy. He is a member of the Southwest Dream Team, and supports, volunteers, and participates in numerous events throughout the community.
